American Presidents During Israel's Hardships Within My Lifetime of Voting

Nadene Goldfoot
#33 Truman: May 8, 1884-December 26, 1972

I turned 18 in September 1952.  The president then was our 33rd;  Harry S. Truman, Democrat in from April 12, 1945 to January 20 1953.
He was the 1st to vote Israel in as a state through the United Nations May 14, 1948.  The Jews had fought for independence from November 29, 1947 and lasted until the signing of the Armistice Agreements in 1949.   His Vice President was  Alben William  Barkley.

Somehow in doing my genealogy, I have connected to both President Truman and  his wife, Bess Truman through my mother's side of the family, Mildred Elizabeth Goldfoot nee Robinson.  It would be through her paternal grandmother's side, the Tuller line.  I am his 8th cousin once removed of Bess.   This is if I waded through the Clarke's correctly to get to them on the tree, and I think I was pretty careful.  Here's the first Clark connecting me to their tree.
Descendants of Samuel B Gates, Jr.

Samuel B Gates, Jr. b: January 23, 1783 in Marlborough, Middlesex, Massachusetts d: October 23, 1870 in Lunenburg, Essex, Vermont Occupation: 1860 Farmer
.. +Jerusha Russell Clark b: December 18, 1783 in Westhampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts d: March 03, 1872 in Chelsea, Orange, Vermont
. George Williams Gates b: March 05, 1807 in Lunenburg, Essex, Vermont d: July 05, 1890 in Independence, Jackson, Missouri Occupation: 1860 lime Bowner

..... +Sarah D. Todd b: January 10, 1807 in Maine/Illinois d: August 18, 1889 in Prob. Missouri

"Incumbent President Harry S. Truman, the Democratic nominee, defeated Republican Governor Thomas E. Dewey. Truman's victory is considered to be one of the greatest election upsets in American history. Truman had acceded to the presidency in April 1945 after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945."  Roosevelt had been president for 4 terms, dying during his 4th.  After this happened, the law was changed so that a president would only serve 2 terms.
"While President Franklin D. Roosevelt appeared to be sympathetic to the Jewish cause, his assurances to the Arabs that the United States would not intervene without consulting both parties caused public uncertainty about his position.

When President Harry S. Truman took office, he made clear that his sympathies were with the Jews and accepted the Balfour Declaration, explaining that it was in keeping with former President Woodrow Wilson's principle of "self determination." Truman initiated several studies of the Palestine situation that supported his belief that, as a result of the Holocaust, Jews were oppressed and also in need of a homeland. Throughout the Roosevelt and Truman administrations, the Departments of War and State, recognizing the possibility of a Soviet-Arab connection and the potential Arab restriction on Oil supplies to the United States, advised against U.S. intervention on behalf of the Jews."
David Ben Gurion was Prime Minister of Israel during this time."  Luckily, Truman decided against these departments.

34 Eisenhower: October 14, 1890-March 28, 1969
Dwight David Eisenhower, former General,  Republican,  was the next president from January 20, 1953 to January 20, 1961.  His Vice President was Richard Nixon. " The popular incumbent President, Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower, successfully ran for re-election. The election was a re-match of 1952, as Eisenhower's opponent in 1956 was Adlai Stevenson, former Illinois governor whom Eisenhower had defeated four years earlier."  It was in 1953 that we had a TV set in Portland, Oregon and received a rather weak quality of a picture.  News was still best from the radio and newspapers.

Israel had to fight the Sinai War from October 29 to November 5, 1956, a 7 day war when Israel was stopped by Russian military supplies  to Egypt and Syria resulting in the Suez Canal and the Gulf of Eilat taken from Israel for navigation, very important to them.  By October 1956, Jordan joined the Egyptian-Syrian pact against Israel.  " Here was the one case of an American president who seemed to accept the Arabist view that good relations with Israel must harm those with the Arabs. When push came to shove, Eisenhower acted on this belief, compelling the Israelis to evacuate the Sinai Peninsula following the Suez War.  He put an arms embargo on Israel. Decades later, Arab leaders like Yasir Arafat still dream that another American president might "do what Eisenhower did" and force Israelis from the West Bank and the Golan Heights."  That's how Arabs got a foothold into Judea and Samaria (West Bank).

35  Kennedy:  May 29,1917-November 22 1963
John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Democrat, was the 35th president from January 20, 1961 to November 22, 1963 assassinated in office.  His Vice President was Lyndon Johnson .  "In a closely contested election, Democrat John F. Kennedy defeated incumbent Vice President Richard Nixon, the Republican Party nominee. ... He defeated Senate Majority Leader Lyndon B. Johnson on the first presidential ballot of the 1960 Democratic National Convention, and asked Johnson to serve as his running mate.

Egypt continued as the chief country of hostility and hatred towards Israel.  Their General Nasser wrote to King Hussein of Jordan on March 13, 1961: WE BELIEVE THAT THE EVIL WHICH WAS PLACED IN THE HEART OF THE ARAB WORLD SHOULD BE ERADICATED."Kennedy firmly believed in the U.S. commitment to Israeli security, but his Middle Eastern policy saw ambitious Pan-Arabic initiatives of Gamal Abdel Nasser. In 1960, Kennedy stated: "Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy and it honors the sword of freedom."" Kennedy ended the arms embargo that the Eisenhower and Truman administrations had enforced on Israel. Describing the protection of Israel as a moral and national commitment, he was the first to introduce the concept of a 'special relationship' (as he described it to Golda Meir) between the US and Israel.[
" Yad Kennedy (Hebrew: יד קנדי‎), located in the Mateh Yehuda Region near Jerusalem, Israel, is a memorial to John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, who was assassinated in Dallas, Texas in 1963."

36  Johnson: August 27, 1908-January 22, 1973
Lyndon Baines Johnson, Democrat,  was president immediately from November 22, 1963 to January 20, 1969. His Vice President was Hubert Humphrey

"Historians generally regard Johnson as the president most uniformly friendly to Israel.Indeed, it was Johnson, as Senate majority leader, who stood in the way years earlier of Dwight Eisenhower’s plans to cut off assistance to Israel. He knew few Jews growing up in Texas, but cultivated lifelong friendships as he rose through the ranks of the Democratic Party, which had become the natural political home for most Jews."
In 1966, Syria heightened the tension for Israel with a revolution-their 9th since 1949.  Their Ba'ath Party, backed by the USSR, seized power.  The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) is an organization founded in 1964 with the purpose of the "liberation of Palestine" through armed struggle, with much of its violence aimed at Israeli civilians. By 1967 all had the active policy of hostility towards Israel.  The Six Day War was from May to June 5 to June 11, 1967.  Israel waited for 3 weeks from May 15th for international action to stop an escalation of movement of troops against Israel's frontiers, but UN and USA were incapable . Israel won against all odds. Arabs, which affects Palestinian Arabs,  held a Conference in Khartoum in August 1967 and came up with their 3 NOs.  No peace, No negotiations, No recognition of Israel.  As of today, September 2018, that still hasn't changed though presidents keep on trying to get the Palestinians to back down.    Since 1967 Israel had an Open Bridges policy with Jordan.  Arabs from administered areas could visit other Arab countries.
Levi Eshkol was Prime Minister of Israel then.

37  Nixon: January 9, 1913-April 22, 1994
Known as the anti-Semite who saved Israel
He had shared these negative feeling with others of this period:
The Jews are all over the government.” “Most Jews are disloyal.” “You can’t trust the bastards. They turn on you.” “The Jews are born spies.”Jews were prevalent on Nixon’s infamous “enemies list,” drawn up, according to a 1971 memo by White House counsel John Dean, to assess “how we can use the available federal machinery to screw our political enemies.” The same year, Nixon asked Fred Malek, the White House personnel chief, to count and name the Jews employed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Nixon was convinced Jews in the bureau were skewing jobs numbers to make him look bad.
Richard Milhous Nixon, Republican,,  was our 37th president from January 20, 1969 to August 9, 1974 with Spiro Agnew and then Gerald Ford as vice presidents. He had to resign.

During this time, Israel went through their War of Attrition from 1968 to 1970.  In September 1970 President Nasser of Egypt died and was succeeded by President Sadat.  By 1971, there were arrangements made to open the Suez Canal so Israel withdrew.  July 1972 Sadat expelled the Soviet military personnel from Egypt.  Soviets had continued supplying them with weapons.  Israel allowed from 1971 Arabs from administered areas to visit within Israel without a permit and other Arabs could visit in summer months.  By 1972, 156,000 had visited.
Nixon with Foreign Minister Abba Eban March 14, 1969

"The Yom Kippur War, Ramadan War, or October War, also known as the 1973 Arab–Israeli War, was a war fought from October 6 to 25, 1973, by a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria against Israel. The results were: Israeli military victory but they suffered " "2,700 Israeli servicemen were killed, thousands were inured and almost 300 captured. " , Political gains for Egypt and Israel, 1978 Camp David Accords.  The had been located in Both banks of the Suez CanalGolan Heights and surrounding regions.  "Nixon stands out among presidents for taking the boldest risk for Israel: a much-needed arms airlift during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. An astonishing 567 missions by American aircraft (not to mention deliveries by sea and El Al flights) kept Israel fighting. Nixon ignored the counsel of his closest adviser, Henry Kissinger, who wanted to allow the war to play out for a while longer to give Egyptian President Anwar Sadat the political cover he needed to make peace in its aftermath. The stakes were too high for Israel to play with timing, Nixon told Kissinger.

By late 1973, the Watergate scandal escalated, costing Nixon much of his political support. On August 9, 1974, he resigned in the face of almost certain impeachment and removal from office. After his resignation, he was issued a controversial pardon by his successor, Gerald Ford.

Nixon was a Quaker.  His double attitude towards Israel could be because of Quaker attitudes.  "The twentieth century saw a rapprochement as British, American and German Friends were heavily involved the rescue of Jews from Nazi Germany and in the countries that the Nazis invaded. The Kindertransport, bringing over around 10,000 children to Britain before and during the second world war, brought Friends and Jews together. On the other hand, the stance that some Friends’ bodies have taken towards the state of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians has caused friction, especially in the United States. This is in spite of the fact that Friends try to work both with Israelis and Palestinians, looking for the divine light in all parties.

Levi Eshkol was Prime Minister and then
Golda Meir was the next during this period. Nixon liked her a lot.

38  Ford:  July 14, 1913-December 26, 2006

Gerald Rudolf Ford, Republican, was our 38th president from August 9, 1974 to January 20, 1977.  His vice president was Nelson Rockefeller.  .

About a letter Ford wrote about Israel:   " In this letter, 76 Senators came out openly against the Ford administration's efforts to blame Israel for the suspension of the talks in March and criticized the policy of withholding aid from Israel. The Senators called for return to the 1967 policy of achieving peace through direct negotiations between the parties."  "Taking over from Nixon, Ford kept Henry Kissinger as secretary of state, mindful of the delicate diplomatic fabric that emerged in the Middle East after the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Kissinger’s intensive shuttle diplomacy and Ford’s active interest culminated in a truce between Israel and Egypt in 1975.  That truce, and the quiet that ensued, laid the groundwork for the 1978 Camp David peace accords brokered by Ford’s successor, Jimmy Carter.   In a statement issued Wednesday, the Anti-Defamation League remembered Ford for his support of Soviet Jews as well as his strong stance on Israel. " Was he running hot and cold about Israel?  Do they act as a result of trying to hold onto voters?

39  Carter:  October 1, 1924

The next president was James Earl Carter, Jr.Democrat from January 20, 1977 to January 20, 1981 with Walter Mondale as vice president.  In the 1980 election, Jimmy Carter won 45 percent of the Jewish vote.

Sadat visited Israel on November 19, 1977.     Operation Litani took place in Israel in 1978.  This brought about the PLO's retreat from South Lebanon.  It was a response after the Coastal Road massacre.  "Part of the Israeli–Lebanese conflict, the Palestinian insurgency in South Lebanon and Lebanese Civil War." Its stated goals were to push Palestinian militant groups, particularly the PLO, away from the border with Israel, and to bolster Israel's ally at the time, the South Lebanon Army, because of the attacks against Lebanese Christians and Jews and because of the relentless shelling into Northern Israel. The area south of the Litani River, excepting Tyre, was invaded and occupied in a week long offensive.  When I arrived in Israel in September 1980, this was still going on.  We had a friend trapped in a bomb shelter on Israel's border with Lebanon who couldn't get out for days.  In 2006 the former President said that Israel’s policies in the West Bank were actually worse than apartheid South Africa. Carter wrote several damning books against Israel. One, accusing Israel of Apartheid, was Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid   Another was We Can Have Peace In The Holy Land: A Plan That Will Work.  I note he calls Israel "the Holy Land".  Following the Palestine lead, he could not bring himself to recognize Israel in this writing.  He had called on the USA to recognize Palestine. But while Israel, the apartheid state, cannot be trusted, Carter told The Today Show that the party that can be trusted is Hamas.  This former peanut farmer and Sunday School teacher was not receptive to Israel.  He was friendly towards Fidel Castro, though, and mourned his death.

40  Reagan-February 6, 1911-June 5, 2004

Ronald Wilson Reagan, Republican,  was president from January 20, 1981 to January 20, 1989 with George H.W. Bush as his vice president. "It was held on Tuesday, November 6, 1984. Incumbent Republican President Ronald Reagan defeated former Vice President Walter Mondale, the Democratic candidate

In 1967 he strongly supported Israel during the *Six-Day War and was the featured speaker at a pro-Israel rally in the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.
Sadat of Egypt  was assassinated on October 6, 1981.

Upon assuming office Reagan's Middle East position could be summarized as follows: First, a militarily strong Israel, which is both democratic and anti-Soviet, is "the only remaining strategic asset in the region on which we can rely" (Washington Post, August 1979); second, opposition to the terrorist PLO and rejection of the notion of a PLO state because it would be a surrogate to the Soviet Union; third, strong support for Israel as America's most reliable ally in the Middle East and unequivocal support for Egyptian and Israeli peacemakers as the best way to attract other Arab states to the peace process.

Reagan understood that charges of illegality aimed at Israel's conduct in the West Bank and Gaza had nothing to do with allegiance to rule of law in the sense of objective jurisprudence. Rather, it had everything to do with using law as a weapon in order to isolate Israel on the diplomatic front as a prelude to legitimating terrorism and other hostilities against Israel as a pariah state. The formula that Reagan repeatedly espoused was that "the settlements are not unlawful." (meaning Jewish towns in Judea-Samaria)
He was president during Israel's Lebanon War where Sharon went to Lebanon and allowed the Lebanese army go into the Palestinian camp to stop them from attacking Israel.  I was in Safed at the time.   "Nearly 15 years of warfare from 1985 to 2000 between the Israel Defense Forces and its Lebanese Christian proxy militias against Lebanese Muslim guerrilla, led by Iranian-backed Hezbollah, within what was defined by Israelis as the "Security Zone" in South Lebanon."
  • First Intifada (1987–1993) – First large-scale Palestinian uprising against Israel in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
  • Menacham Begin was Prime Minister during this time.  1978-1985
  • Shimon Peres also was Prime Minister during this period. 1985-2000
  • Yitzak Shamir was Prime Minister from 1987-1993

41   Bush:  June 12, 1924

George Herbert Walker Bush, Republican,  was president from January 20, 1989 to January 20, 1993 with Danforth Quayle as his vice president.

The continuation up to 2000 of Lebanese Muslim guerrilla warfare against Israel led by Hezbollah terrorists. Also the continuation of the 1st Intifada going on during entire time in office in 1993.
The elder President Bush outraged the Jewish community with a series of perceived insults. Before he became president, the younger Bush, who once expressed doubt about whether non-Christians could get into heaven, seemed likely to follow in the family tradition.  He  had extensive ties to Arabs through the oil industry as well. But most Jews did not consider him unfriendly to their interests so long as he served under Ronald Reagan.  Reagan's hard line on the defense of Israel got Jewish votes, however, which he considered a crucial democratic outpost in the fight against Soviet communism.

42  Clinton  August 19, 1946

William Jefferson Clinton, Democrat, was president from January 20, 1993 to January 20, 2001 with Albert Gore as vice president. Clinton won the 1992 presidential election (370 electoral votes) against Republican incumbent George H. W. Bush (168 electoral votes) and billionaire populist Ross Perot (0 electoral votes), who ran as an independent on a platform that focused on domestic issues.

  • Second Intifada (2000–2005) – Second Palestinian uprising, a period of intensified violence, which began in late September 2000. against Israel. The 2000 Camp David Summit was a summit meeting at Camp David between United States president Bill Clinton, Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian Authority chairman Yasser Arafat.
  • Clinton preferred the Kadima Party,  worked on helping Peres beat Netanyahu in the 1996 elections, thinking he was more for peace.   Netanyahu then barely won anyway.
  • Clinton presented his idea of what should be, parameters.  The Clinton Parameters proposed a Palestinian state comprising between 94–96% of the West Bank and the entire Gaza Strip. Israel would annex the remaining land, which would include Israeli settlements, containing 80% of the settler population, mainly in major settlement blocs. Israel would cede 1–3% of land to the Palestinians in land swaps to compensate for the annexations. The Palestinian state would have to be contiguous, and annexed areas along with the number of Palestinians affected would be as minimized as possible."On 31 December, Barak declared that Israel had accepted Clinton's proposals, but will not accept the Palestinian right of return to Israel and sovereignty over the Temple Mount. Although he chose to accept the plan, Barak sent Clinton a 20-page letter of "reservations". The two main points were that he "would not sign any document that transfers sovereignty on the Temple Mount to the Palestinians", and that "no Israeli prime minister will accept even one refugee on the basis of the right of return."

43  Bush: July 6, 1946
In 1998 he visited Israel. and being a Texan, was surprised at its very small size.

George Walker Bush, Republican, was president from January 20, 2001 to January 20, 2009 with Richard Cheney as vice president. He won against Al Gore and Joe Lieberman.
He was confronted right away with September 11, 2001 and the Twin Towers hit by a plane deliberately by Muslims, starting a new episode for the USA and terrorism.

The US president, George Bush, today called on Israel to end its 41-year occupation of Palestinian land and predicted a peace treaty would be signed by the time he leaves office.
Speaking after a meeting with the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, Bush said: "There should be an end to the occupation that began in 1967. An agreement must establish Palestine as a homeland for the Palestinian people, just as Israel is a homeland for the Jewish people."
  • Continuation of Second Intifada (2000–2005) – Second Palestinian uprising, a period of intensified violence, which began in late September 2000 Then the "
  • 2006 Lebanon War against Israel (summer 2006) – Began as a military operation in response to the abduction of two Israeli reserve soldiers by the Hezbollah. The operation gradually strengthened, to become a wider confrontation. The principal participants were Hezbollah paramilitary forces and the Israeli military. The conflict started on 12 July 2006 and continued until a United Nations-brokered ceasefire went into effect on 14 August 2006, though it formally ended on 8 September 2006, when Israel lifted its naval blockade of Lebanon. The war resulted in the pacification of southern Lebanon and in the weakness of the Hezbollah (which suffered serious casualties but managed to survive the Israeli onslaught). And another battle for Israel "Gaza War (December 2008 – January 2009) – Three-week armed conflict between Israel and Hamas during the winter of 2008–2009. In an escalation of the ongoing Israeli–Palestinian conflict, Israel responded to ongoing rocket fire from the Gaza Strip with military force in an action titled "Operation Cast Lead". Israel opened the attack with a surprise air strike on 27 December 2008. Israel's stated aim was to stop such rocket fire from and the import of arms into Gaza. Israeli forces attacked military and civilian targets, police stations, and government buildings in the opening assault. Israel declared an end to the conflict on 18 January and completed its withdrawal on 21 January 2009.

44 Obama: August 4, 1961

Barack Hussein Obama II, Democrat, was president from January 20, 2009 to January 20, 2017. Joe Biden was his vice president.  He ran against Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan and won.  He also ran against Hillary Clinton and won.

In 2010, "Benjamin Netanyahu was left to stew in a White House meeting room for over an hour after President Barack Obama abruptly walked out of tense talks to have supper with his family, it emerged on Thursday."  The snub marked a fresh low in US-Israeli relations and appeared designed to show Mr Netanyahu how low his stock had fallen in Washington after he refused to back down in a row over Jewish construction in east Jerusalem.  Obama  "immediately presented Mr Netanyahu with a list of 13 demands designed both to the end the feud with his administration and to build Palestinian confidence ahead of the resumption of peace talks. Key among those demands was a previously-made call to halt all new settlement construction in east Jerusalem."

On his last day in office he voted against Israel by not voting for them.  During his tenure he was on TV with Israel's PM Netanyahu arguing about the 1967 armistice line, wanting Israel to go back to it while Netanyahu had to explain why that was suicide for Jews.
 Israel faced two operations then

"The 2008 Democratic platform stated, “Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel.” When the language on Jerusalem was left out of the 2012 platform, Democrats came under came under heavy criticism by pro-Israel groups and Republicans. President Barack Obama moved to reinstatethe language — leading to an awkward televised moment, as convention chair Antonio Villaraigosa had to retake the voice vote three times, finally approving the amendment amid much booing. "(I ask, what person or persons were responsible for taking Jerusalem out?) Democrats had a great history from Truman on of supporting Israel.  This was a compete 180 turn-around.
Democrats opened an office in Tel Aviv promoting Hillary Clinton.

45  Trump June 14, 1946

Donald John Trump, Republican, is president from January 10, 2017 with Mike Pence as his vice president.  He ran against Hillary Clinton, Democrat  and Bernie Sanders, Socialist.  He promised to move the USA embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and he did " which was later opened on May 14, 2018. Every previous president said they would but failed to follow through.  By September 2018, he had closed the PLO office in Washington DC because of the Arab failure to negotiate.  "In a statement on Monday, the US State Department said the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) office "has not taken steps to advance the start of direct and meaningful negotiations with Israel".
July 2018 with up to reported on August 9, 2018 ,  with 180 rockets from Gaza into Israel,  They spend all their donations on weapons to use against Israel or to dig tunnels used against Israel.  They've flown balloons with fire into Israel burning down forests and crops.
Benjamin Netanyahu is Prime Minister, a friend.
